Breast cancer has touched three generations of my family. I have walked in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Fort Worth, Texas, for over ten years in memory of my grandmother and mother and in honor/memory of many friends.
On April 6, 2007, I walked with my daughter, a close friend and many other friends on the Birdville Independent School District team in 37 degree weather in a snowfall (remember this is Fort Worth, Texas in April!) Little did I know that one week later I would join the many great ladies in pink at that walk with the diagnosis of breast cancer.
The moment I received that news I feel I became a survivor. Many women have walked this walk before me and because of the research that has been done in the past 40 years; I reaped the benefits by receiving great medical treatments, care and a great prognosis.
Everyone experiences their walk with cancer differently. I was amazed at the support and comfort everyone in my circle of family, friends, coworkers, acquaintances, and even friends of friends gave me while I made that journey through the surgery, chemotherapy and therapy for the lymphedema after surgery. Now it is my time to give back.
It is on my heart to do the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk in Dallas in November of 2008. I will be taking this challenge for two purposes.
- First, I will be walking to raise funds which will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. I have made a commitment to raise $2,200 for this walk to help build a future without breast cancer. The chance to help fund the research that will find a cure so everyone can live a lifetime is a worthy one.
- Second, I will consider it a privilege to walk in honor or in memory for your grandmothers, mothers, sisters, nieces, daughters, wives, husbands, grandfathers, sons, nephews (yes, men can have breast cancer too) and friends that have been affected by breast cancer.
Francis and Joyce Kohout, are making the walk with me. They have been an inspiration and steady support during my journey. Joyce is my sister and best friend. Francis is my very, very favorist brother-in law. Please check the Team Members page to see their story. They have also made a commitment to raise $4,400 for the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk. We need to raise $6,600! We will need your help!
Please consider making a donation online. If you wish, you can spread out your donation out over four monthly payments. If you don't want to donate online, please download and fill out the donation form and mail it to the address on the form. Or you can call 800.996.3DAY to donate over the phone.
